Reflection
My journey in learning about educational psychology has been enlightening and impactful. To say I have learned a lot would be an understatement. Educational psychology taught me about the workings behind learning and teaching and how knowing that information can help me create an effective learning environment. I also learned that every learner has certain rights! It is amazing how learners don't even know that they have these rights, I mean, I sure didn't! I found out how to motivate learners and how to create an environment where learners can motivate themselves and learned a lot about myself and others when I took the cultural plunge and made myself a minority in a situation.
Assessing learners is something that I am very passionate about due to my career goals in education policy. I have personally always believed there are more negatives to standardized testing than positives and I loved learning about these tests from an educational psychology viewpoint. I felt the same about IQ testing and culture. I was completely unaware of the international usage of a test that follows Western cultural ideals! Culture determines how people think and perceive information so these tests really need to be reflective of the influence culture can have on scores.
I am very passionate about ending the use of certain words and negative language towards those with disabilities and creating an inclusive environment for not only these students but every student from every background. These students all have the right to a quality education and I intend to have a hand in creating this education by reforming the existing system.
